Program Notes

In ancient China, fu-gu (撫古) means depicting the antiquity. Fu-gu Painting (《撫古圖》), a series of paintings accomplished by a Chinese artist Hongshou Chen (陈洪绶) of the Ming dynasty, represents the first use of symbolism as a literati painting technique in Chinese art history, yet at that time this ingenious artist was only at his twenty-one. A miniature bonsai, a butterfly enticed by the embroidery on a fan, a tiny moon appeared in a ceramic basin......Fantasy and reality are merged together in his work, and within sophisticated lines, the infinite changes of nature brought me immense imagination and inspiration.
